Hey gang,
I very rarely take federal holidays or long weekends off, but today, I’m doing just that. (It’s Washington’s birthday/President’s Day in the United States, for anyone who’s either located somewhere else or doesn’t generally keep track of federal holidays.) The past few months have been a bit tumultuous, so I’m trying to make sure I’m better than I usually am about giving myself time to recharge when I need it. (Why, yes, I’m a workaholic; why do you ask?)
Anyhoo, the upshot is, no long-form post today; but! Our usual Wednesday post will still be going live later this week, so check back on Feb. 19 for this week’s Most Dangerous Game.
And in the meantime, here’s something to keep you occupied: “There Are Monsters,” a short film from 2008 that’s… spookier than it really seems like it should be. It’s low budget, and the acting isn’t great, but it’s effective all the same; if things — and people — who just seem a little bit off really gets you, this one should stick with you. I also dig the style in which it’s shot — it’s ostensibly third-person omniscient, as is common for narrative film, but it often feels more like the camera itself belongs to an unseen character. It’s almost as if the viewer is positioned sort of as a voyeur, and, well… it’s weird. Good weird. Keep-you-looking-behind-you weird.
Watch it here:
See you all later this week!
